Brookfield Zoo Welcomes Snow Leopard Cub (PHOTOS)

There’s snow this summer at the Brookfield Zoo—a snow leopard, that is.
A male snow leopard was born June 13 to mom Sarani and dad Sabu, the zoo announced Friday.

The cub, who now weighs about 10 pounds, will be nestled away from visitors until he is 3-months-old so that he has plenty of time to bond with his mom.
His parents came to the Brookfield Zoo in October 2011 as part of the Snow Leopard Species Survival Plan. Snow leopards are an endangered species with a population in the wild somewhere between 3,500 and 7,000. There are 140 snow leopards, including the zoo’s newest addition, in captivity in North America.

Snow leopards are native to mountainous countries of central Asia, including Afghanistan, China and India.
