At Wheaton Event, African-American Military Leaders Talk Gun Violence

A panel discussion featuring African-American military leaders and held at Cantigny Park's First Division Museum in Wheaton in February focused heavily on gun-violence issues, such as the nearly 2,500 shootings reported in Chicago in 2012, the Suburban Life reports.

According to the paper, featured guest Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honore said that change needs to happen in politics, communities and families, and that more political focus needs to be placed not on "Wall Street versus Main Street," but on "Railroad Street," places where a lack of access to education, arts and after-school activities railroad young people into violence and crime.

"Show me where the violence is happening in the city, and I'll show you a whole class of kids that are growing up, that are not reading at a fourth-grade level," the paper quoted the lieutenant general saying. "We've got to fix that because that's human capital that's not being developed."
