WASHINGTON – Congressman Peter Roskam (IL-06) released the following statement in response to the Department of Labor’s unemployment report for September 2013:
“September’s jobs report showed hiring stumbled and fewer jobs than expected were created. In short, our economy is continuing to tread water and we must change course before it’s too late. In the coming weeks and months, we have the chance to address our nation’s most challenging problems. House Republicans are working to lift the crushing burden of debt that is weighing our economy down by tackling our long-term spending drivers. We are working to make the tax code simpler and fairer for individuals and more globally competitive for American businesses to create jobs here at home.
“Moving forward, many of us fear the rise of a part-time economy thanks to Obamacare, because the law disincentivizes businesses from keeping or hiring full time workers. It’s not just economists or conservative policy advocates expressing concern, even labor union leaders are ringing the alarm bells, saying the law will ‘destroy the foundation of the 40-hour work week that is the backbone of the American middle class.’ Obamacare is plunging our health care system into the morass of the federal bureaucracy, at the cost of the economy, jobs and access to quality care. Having failed to create a functioning website after three years of development, it’s no wonder the public has serious questions about whether this Administration can run our entire health care industry successfully.

“We will fight to continue aggressive oversight of Obamacare, make the law fair for all, and protect Americans from the worst parts of it. We will also continue to listen to the public who has serious concerns about our country’s direction and the opportunities many Americans see as now out of reach. It’s time to create a long-term growth economy that doesn’t just get us through this economic slog, but puts us on a path to thrive and grow and prosper into the future.”
