Fox Valley Orchestra presents Operatic Treasures

On Sunday, April 27, at 3:00 p.m. the Fox Valley Orchestra, Fox Valley Chorus, and the Aurora University Chorale join forces in Crimi Auditorium at Aurora University to perform favorite opera choruses.  The orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Colin Holman, and the chorus, under the direction of Dr. Lisa Fredenburgh, fill the hall with the rousing sounds of operatic favorites.  Included in the program are the works of Verdi's Aida and La Traviata, Donizetti's La fille du Regiment, Weber's Der Freischutz, Wagner's Lohengrin, and Bizet's Carmen.

What is opera without the stars?  Featured soloists grace the stage for the performance.  Mezzo-soprano Sarah Holman, internationally known clinician and faculty member at the Wheaton Music Conservatory at Wheaton College, brings "O don fatale" to life.   Holman has appeared with Opera Southwest, Lyric Opera Cleveland, DuPage Opera, Muddy River Opera, Chicago Chamber Opera, City Opera of the Quad Cities, and Kansas Opera. Holman recently returned from Changhua, Taiwan, where she was a featured artist and master teacher with the Southern Young Artist Opera Project.  In addition, Aurora University faculty member Joshua Baum, tenor, performs "Ah! mes amis" and baritone Mark Plummer, also a faculty member at Aurora University, is featured in the "Toreador" song from Carmen.  Joining Baum for "Brindisi" from La Traviata is soprano Kelli Finn.

Also on the program is Michael Zyzak, first-place winner of the Fox Valley Orchestra Youth Concerto Competition.    He performs the first movement from the Dvorak Cello Concerto.   At only 12 years of age, this young cellist was the unanimous winner of the David Popper Cello International Competition in Hungary, and currently studies with Richard Hirschl, cellist for the CSO and faculty member at the Music Institute of Chicago.  Now 16, he recently won the first prize at the Rising Stars Southeast Missouri Competition.
