An open house, guest readers and community service will highlight this observance of National Catholic Schools Week at St. Michael Parish School.
The events are part of the nationwide celebration of Catholic education during the week of January 29 to February 3. This year’s theme is “Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics. Service.” The theme expresses Catholic schools’ focus on learning about faith, striving for high academic standards, and serving the community.
On Wednesday, February 1, the school will welcome guest readers, including Wheaton Mayor, Michael Gresk, who will proclaim the week “Catholic Schools Week” in the City of Wheaton. Guest readers are invited to a breakfast at 8:30 a.m. They will be in the classrooms at 9:00 a.m.
St. Michael Parish School, 314 W. Willow Ave., Wheaton, IL, invites prospective students, their families and community residents to tour the school on Friday, February 3, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about programs for preschool – eighth grade students, observe classes in session, and pick up enrollment materials.
Throughout the week, students will participate in their Faith-in-Action Community Service Projects. Some of the organizations served through the Faith-in-Action program include Marklund Homes, DuPage PADs, People’s Resource Center, Humanitarian Service Project, and St. Malachy’s Soup Kitchen
“At St. Michael, our mission is to educate the whole child in an atmosphere of academic excellence and faith,” said Principal, Marcia Opal. “We’re excited to have the opportunity during Catholic Schools Week to share our programs and what our students have accomplished with the entire community.”
Catholic Schools Week is a joint project of the National Catholic Educational Association and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

More About St. Michael Parish School
St. Michael Parish School is Wheaton's only Catholic elementary school and is located on the same property as St. Michael Church. It hosts students from Wheaton, Winfield, Carol Stream, Lisle, Glen Ellyn, West Chicago and Warrenville for kindergarten and/or preschool up to 8th grade.
St. Michael's history dates back to 1879, when construction on the Wheaton Catholic Church was finalized. In 1911, the church was severely burned, and in 1923, the oldest section of the present building was completed. In 1974, the Sisters of Notre Dame from Toledo, Ohio, came to be a part of St. Michael School's staff. Construction on the office area, gym and parish center was completed in 1985.
