Life-Long Love Story Finds its Footing

A childhood romance turned into a life of loss until fate intervened over a decade later.

It’s been an epic romance: puppy love at 12, years of separation, an unlikely reunion and now, maybe, life happily ever after. It started in 1992, with a children’s Christmastime production of “The Nutcracker” by the Colorado Ballet. A 12-year-old Russian boy, Sasha Kozadayev, slipped into the dressing room of Rebecca King and left her a gift. It was Christmas, after all, and the two had been inseparable since meeting a year earlier. Following in the footsteps of every adolescent boy who's ever fallen for a girl and bought her a gift that's just slightly more mature than either of them are, he left Rebecca a necklace, a vial of perfume, and a note. And like every girl, ever, it was the note that held the most significance to Rebecca. It …

Patch's 'Sunday Toons' Featured in Riverside Art Show

Artist Charley Krebs shows off his Patch work at Riverside Public Library.

For cartoonist Charley Krebs, drawing his thoughts has always been a form of shorthand journalism. "A good image will draw you in," Krebs said of his work. "It makes an editorial comment and can start a good discussion." Krebs has been drawing the news since 1979, first at his college newspaper and most recently here at Patch. Readers can see his Sunday Cartoon weekly on their local Patch site where Krebs offers his unique vision of the world and his opinion on events that matter to readers. While much may have changed in the cartooning business since he got his start, Krebs said he loves the ability to work with a digital news site. "Everything is instantaneous," he said. "I can come up with an idea, draw it and have it up on the site the…

On a Scale of 1-10, How Good Was 'The Hunger Games'?

OK, you went to the midnight showing. You've had a chance to sleep in. How was it?

Did you go to the midnight community movie outing showing of The Hunger Games? How was it? We're looking for a little local reaction.  The Daily Herald's Dann Gire calls it "a mildly sexless, blunted action thriller featuring cheesy digital flame effects and a superbly sympathetic, highly physical performance by Jennifer Lawrence as a female John Rambo." Ouch. (But he still gave it three stars.) The Tribune's Michael Phillips also gives it three stars, calling it "pretty gripping." Roger Ebert gives it three stars and calls it "effective entertainment," but he adds that he found the movie too long and deliberate. What do you think?

Glen Ellyn Home to Previous Academy Award Nominee

Former Glen Ellyn resident and sound mixer Michael Herbick dishes about his Oscar experience before Sunday's Academy Awards.

Sound and music can evoke certain emotions from theater-goers while sitting in a dark theater, watching a newly released feature film. This Sunday numerous films are up for Best Sound during the 2012 Academy Awards and Glen Ellyn is home to a previous five-time Best Sound nominee.   Although Michael Herbick isn't nominated for an Academy Award this year, he has an impressive filmography that includes five Oscar nominations. Herbick, a Glen Ellyn native and 1967 Glenbard West High School graduate, was previously nominated for Best Sound for his sound mixing work in the following films: But the road to sound mixing wasn't easy. After graduating from high school Herbick was unsure about his future. He attended College of DuPage to study …
