Wheaton Park District Offers "Summer Enrichment" Classes

The Wheaton Park District will offer summer enrichment classes at Monroe Middle School beginning Jun. 18 and ending in mid-July.

For years now, university studies from schools including John Hopkins and the University of Missouri have documented a measureable learning loss in student achievement over summer vacation months.

Summer enrichment programs are a great way to help protect students from learning loss. Effective summer enrichment programs have been shown to lead to higher achievement and attendance, as well as increased motivation for students during the following school year.

This summer Community Unit School District 200 and the have partnered to create a special Summer Enrichment Program for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

The program presents a unique assortment of camps and classes to help students cultivate new skills and strengthen old ones in a fun, nurturing environment.

The subjects being offered include:

  • Science courses, such as: Hands-on-physics, Explosive Experiments or Roller Coaster Design
  • Computer skills courses, such as: Microsoft Office Suite or Social Media for the Family
  • Applied Math courses, including: Cooking, Sewing or Model Home Building
  • Arts & Literature courses, such as: Creative Arts Camp or a Brown Bag Reading Club

Jen Bruggeman, a Wheaton Park District Education Supervisor, describes the new summer enrichment program as a perfect blend of summer camp and summer school.

“The kids will be engaged with peers, while being challenged by trained teachers who really understand their needs," Bruggeman said in a statement.
