Councilman Tom Mouhelis Will Not Seek Re-Election

Wheaton City Councilman Tom Mouhelis will not seek re-election. After 12 years on the Council and 30 years in the U.S. Air Force, he is ready for himself and his family.

"I'm tired. Honest to God, I'm just tired."

Wheaton City Councilman Tom Mouhelis has spent two-thirds of his life in public service and is ready to relax.

He said Thursday he will not seek re-election to his seat in April 2013. He said he wanted to let everyone know of his decision well before the filing period begins for candidate petitions Nov. 19.

"(I) wanted to be above board... It's easier to just let people know at this stage," he said. "I need time for myself and my family—12 years is a long time to be on (City) Council, and 30 years in the Air Force—that's a long time (too)."

Wheaton Mayor Mike Gresk said he has always found Mouhelis to be a responsible and focused member of the Council. He said Mouhelis' institution of a program to recognize veterans has shown his dedication to men and women in the armed forces.

Mouhelis is the Councilman in the city's east district. His term ends in May 2013.

The filing period for petitions begins Monday, Nov. 19 and ends Monday, Nov. 26. Petitions may be filed at the City Clerk's office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. (Note: City Hall offices are officially closed on Thursday, Nov. 22, and Friday, Nov. 23, 2012.)

The consolidated election will be Tuesday, April 9, 2013.
