Santa's response:

Dear An,

Thank you for the thought. And I hope this letter finds you safe, warm, and loved.

But I must tell you honestly all the guns will not go away. Please keep in mind although the world at times can seem like a scary place, it is largely filled with kind and loving people. People who care about children, people who support and nurture others, people connected to life.

Focus more on love, An. Do what you can to make a positive difference in someone else's life. Especially someone who feels left out, unloved, sad. You know who they are. Give them a hug.

Keep thinking about how to make this world a better place. We need more people like you.

Love,

SC

That's a beautiful response, SC. I'm not taking the obvious agenda-driven bait the cartoonist intended.

Sadly, I think Santa would have to think and debate on this issue. Also, I'm sure HE or someone else (who rides with him on his sleigh) would carry a gun to SHOOT anyone who threatens him.

Having all the guns go away is more plausible than having violence go away. It's always been here and always will. Best bet is to have comparable firepower.

I can't possible be the only one who finds this disgusting. Exploiting the supposed view of a child based on what just happened to promote the idea of getting rid of guns. I agree that's a conversation that needs to take place and will in the near future, but I'm sorry, offensive doesn't even begin to describe this "comic."

I also find it highly offensive. The deaths of these innocent children should prompt us to embrace the people that we love in our lives.

Way to go Chuck Ingwersen!!!
Could you possibly be more of an insensitive jerk?
When will you stop with the unfunny Sunday comics?
I, for one, have flagged your comic as inappropriate and I hope that many more do the same.
Only one good thing about this comic is the response from Dinkum!
I can only hope that the Patch decides that your comics are no longer necessary and you are no longer allowed to post them.

I truly don't understand why some people find this cartoon to be offensive. Unfunny? Of course. It is not intended to be funny. It is an attempt to illustrate a real emotion many people — especially children — had as they tried to process the horrific events that occurred in Connecticut. I'm sorry if the cartoon seems insensitive. I've been heartsick since Friday's events, and after struggling with how to respond, I decided to portray a very basic, gut-level wish.

Obviously, it would be impossible for "all the guns" to go away. Nor would that mean an end to violence. But I can't understand those who want to hide their heads in the sand on this issue.

Chuck~ Most of your comics are dumb at best but with that said this comic is not offensive and I actually understood what you were trying to say. Every good person is heartbroken over this horrible tragedy and it will stay with all of us forever.

.
To the families that lost their children, I can't imagine the depth of your grief. If there is any comfort at all, it's in knowing that the vast, vast majority of us are loving, caring people who feel the pain of loss very deeply.

Mr. Ingwersen, take your politics elsewhere and shame on you for using these children.
In time we will talk, Now, we should mourn together.

I got what you were trying to say. And if the Friday tragedy had not occurred, you would not have people reacting this way. It's just too soon I think Chuck.

Nobody is hiding their heads in the sand on this issue. Maybe we are all just tired of having our noses rubbed in it by everybody that thinks that the problem is guns.
I own several guns and none of them have ever killed anybody. I could put one of my guns on your desk and unless a person picked it up and pulled the trigger, it would sit there until the end of time without hurting anyone or anything.
If gun control was truly the answer, Chicago would be the safest place in the country. After all, it was illegal to own a gun in the city of Chicago for 28 years, until the Supreme Court overturned that law.
What was truly offensive about your "comic" was your attempt to, as said by MK, bait the Patch public into an agenda driven debate on gun control, using this tragedy as your catalyst.

"After all, it was illegal to own a gun in the city of Chicago for 28 years"

It's always been legal to own a long gun in Chicago. It's really amazing how many people think otherwise.

Nicely done, Chuck. If we could just all remember back to that period in our childhood when we were that innocent, before the paranoia and prejudice of adulthood clouded our minds and persuaded us to fire the other barrel instead of turning the other cheek.

Dear Santa please stop the killings of innocent children with guns and abortion too. They are both murder. Love from all the children and babies that want to live.

When you've gone to harass people at abortion clinics (though you anti-abortionists call it "prayer vigils"), have you ever offered to adopt the child and pay for the woman's medical expenses? Highly doubtful.

Santa's response:

Dear DO,

Since you are not a child (but seem to think like one), here is my adult response. According to the law, you are incorrect. And this is not the proper forum to debate ethics or morality.

How does anyone with common sense find this offensive? How many children wrote letters to Santa asking for there to be no more wars? So their parent might be able to come home for the Holidays? Or alive for that matter.

To me it's distasteful so soon after the tragedy to use the image of a kid to support one ideology or another. I wonder what the reaction would be if the letter read: "Dear Santa, can you please give my next principal a gun for Christmas so she can protect us?"
I guess the more I think about it it's not really offensive as much as it's distasteful. I wish I had used that word the first time around.

I think it's extremely offensive to use the bodies of children as a soapbox to make a political point. Have a little decency, Chuck

Totally agree. Chuck: Please wait until there is a massacre of grown adults as a soapbox to make a political point. Have a little decency.
