Pro-Life League Stops in Wheaton, Shows Graphic Images and Continues Tour of Demonstrations

Pro-Life Action League held a demonstration on the corner of Roosevelt and Naperville Roads. The group uses disturbing images on signs and posters.

Anyone driving in Wheaton around 5 p.m. Wednesday were likely confronted with the site of anti-abortion signage and around 50 protesters along Naperville and Roosevelt roads.

The protesters were members of the Pro-Life Action League, which made its 15th stop of the Face the Truth Tour in Wheaton. The tour, in its 12th year, will make a total of 24 stops in the Chicago area by the end of the week.

The group used graphic images of aborted fetuses and unborn babies to display their message that "abortion is ugly." Project Coordinator Corrina Gura said the gruesome images would be educational for passersby, and that the image of an unborn child would make it hard for someone to elect to have an abortion.

“The images make the statement hard to forget. They’re harder to ignore," she said.

Nate Scheidler, 19, who is the grandson of the group's founder Joe Scheidler, said he has been participating in the Pro-Life Action League since he was 5- or 6-years-old, and holding his own sign in demonstrations since he was 12.

"People get upset about the posters," he said, "but I think people really just get upset at the reality.”

Protester Dianne Herzog, a nurse who has been active in the group since 2005 said the group "never" wants to be offensive, but wants to show their truth through the posters.

Though Wheaton is considered a highly religious and conservative city, the group felt their efforts were worthwhile. “In Wheaton, I think people just don’t like to be disturbed … but they need to see the truth,” Nate Scheidler said.

“Even the choir has to be reminded,” Herzog said.

Founder Joe Scheidler's wife, Ann Scheidler said that although the demonstration went smoothly and Wheaton police were "extremely friendly," there was much negative feedback.

Nate said, “A few people yelled out things and gave us the finger, but there were others thanking us and giving us thumbs up. It was a mix.”

The group continues the tour in Lake Zurich Thursday.

Bravo to all these people who have the guts to SHOW the TRUTH! Right to abortion laws may never be overturned, but I guarantee these folks sure changed a few minds when the hundreds of thousands of cars went by this horrific signs. Yes, tough to look at. Yes, tough to stomach. But, these people are some of the only voices the unborn have. Bravo, brave people of life!

Vincent, please don't make blanket accusations regarding a woman "killing her own child to solve her own problems". Be better than that.

I think it's great that we live in a country where these people can protest. The same country that affords me the legal right to have an abortion if I so desire. Bravo to those who are Pro-Choice.

By abortion, the mother does not learn to love, but kills even her own child to solve her problems. And by abortion, the father is told that he does not have to take any responsibility at all for the child he has brought into the world. That father is likely to put other women into the same trouble. So abortion just leads to more abortion.

These people and their graphic photos are disgusting. How many unwanted children have they adopted?

I totally agree Sue. What I find particularly hypocritical is that, in my experiance, a majority of those individuals who are pro-life are ALSO anti-gay adoption.

I wonder if they would fight as hard for the rights of the unborn child if that child were gay.

There is a reason a woman has a choice. The radical protesters don't know the circumstances of every situation. I have just recently moved to Wheaton and was digusted when I had to drive by this. I also don't think the police would have been as friendly if this was such a biased town. I am a little disappointed and hope this isn't what goes on around here since i bought a home in what i thought was a tolerant town.

Mitch, I think this was my first logical thought after letting my lunch re-settle and realizing I still had to operate a motor vehicle (Protest + drivers with ADD = danger!!!)—there is no way that any issue of this measure is so simple. A disturbing image will not erase, or clarify, the millions of circumstances that exist. Did images of unhealthy lungs in health class stop people from smoking? Or, if protesters displayed pictures of fallen soldiers in downtown D.C., would that end wars? I just don't think so

Vincent, I have news for you. Women who choose abortion are making one of, if not THE most important difficult decisions of their lives. You seem to think they do so with no more than a second thought. You believe the stereotypes and nothing more. You have no understanding of the circumstances, nor do you care. It's too bad you and your conservative friends couldn't care less about these babies once they are actually born. Need money for food or housing? Too bad! Want to go to a school that provides enough resources to be effective? Too bad! Want health care insurance in case you get sick? Too bad!

Sully,

Two things are destroyed in abortion: a child and the mother's soul. We will take the children--just have them! There are thousands of Catholic organizations throughout DuPage ready to take care of the needy and unwanted.

Vincent, I have to cringe when I read "We will take the children--just have them!" It is clear to me that you have no idea what pregnancy does to a woman, for those 9 months and beyond. It is as though growing a healthy baby is equivalent to growing out your hair to donate to "Locks of Love." Being pregnant is an emotional and physical roller coaster ride, that you changes you in every imaginable way. And the opportunities for things to go wrong are countless, even for the woman who takes perfect care of herself from the moment she finds out she is pregnant. But the woman who doesn't want to be pregnant? Actually hates being pregnant and the child she is carrying? Or is addicted to drugs or alcohol? I can't even imagine it.
I loved being pregnant--not every woman does, but I did--usually. But there were days, MANY days, when I didn't like it at all. And the things that the baby was doing to me? And my body? and my mind? I shudder to think about a woman who didn't want to be carrying a child in the first place.
I hate abortion.
But I can't fathom a world where women are forced to carry babies they don't want. And as Sully said, what happens then? When those thousands of new babies are born monthly, sick, drug-addicted, malnourished, uncared for? Can we really expect Catholic Charities to care for all of them, with all their special needs, medical and otherwise? Can we really expect our society, YOU and I, to adopt these children, at a rate of 70,000 per month?

And there are thousands of disadvantaged children being born into terrible circumstances. Charities may have the best of intentions, but they cannot provide all that is needed. I do not endorse abortion. It is a terrible thing. The mother's "soul" is destroyed a bit. But it is a choice that should be left personal.

I am all about people having the right to form their own opinion on this topic. However, I have a problem when people are showing graphic pictures like these for all to see. How do you explain that to kids in the car when they ask you what that is? It's inappropriate and disrespectful to expose young children to graphic images like that and it opens a dialogue that no parent needs to be having with their kids. There is a time and a place for everything, but a busy intersection with graphic pictures is not the way to do it.

I am with Stephanie above. I drove through Palatine today and was shocked by what I saw. There is a time and a place for everything, and I agree a busy intersection with graphic pictures is not the way. I have rights too and although I am not in favor of abortion I would prefer not to have your rights and pictures shoved down my throat.

Thanks for the heads up! If they want adults to see this, let them. But I'll make it a point to skip this area when I am with my children. Exposing them to these issues at this age is unacceptable. As for the comments that looking at a poster of a dead fetus is going to stop someone from having an abortion (a previous commenter "guaranteed" this) I'd love to see the evidence. It seems to me that this group could do more good by looking into why people who are likely to have an abortion and help them to not get pregnant. Then abortion becomes moot.

Americans have spent billions of dollars on this issue, campaign contributions, TV ads, picketing, religious events, legal fee's ect.

With all that money we could have saved the aborted children and given them a strong head start, but instead we demonize each other, and remain a divided country.

Now would be a good time to reform the abortion laws, let women from all side of this issue start a new dialog with a common goal to reduce the number of abortions.

Men have a roll to play in this as well, by not getting women pregnant.

As a former fetus myself, I'm so happy to see people defending other helpless fetuses. The abortion issue always gets clouded by people shouting rhetoric about "circumstances of the mother", "the situation is tough", "how many unwanted babies have you adopted?" "gay rights", and so on. All of that is just noise. Abortion stripped down to his fundamental argument is quite simple. Is this unborn baby a human being and therefore entitled to its life just like rest of us? And if so, shouldn't it be protected and held in high regard by its own kind, its' fellow human beings who are able to come to its defense? Animals do better than us when it comes to this issue. This really shouldn't be an issue. Science has proven time and time again that in fact a human baby is growing inside a woman when she's pregnant. I've yet to read a story about a woman giving birth to anything other than a human being. Basically once we can all agree with common sense that a baby (who is completely innocent and has all the potential in the world) deserves to be born then all these separate issues can have a focus. Keep in mind that everyone holding these signs, upset by these signs, posting comments and reading these comments were once former fertilized eggs, zygotes, embryos, fetuses, babies, toddlers, children and all human beings.
