The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) passed a measure Tuesday evening allowing openly gay men and women in same-sex relationships to be ordained as clergy, the Huffington Post reports.

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) presence in Wheaton includes First Presbyterian Church, Peace Presbyterian Church and Hope Presbyterian Church.

The church's general assembly voted on the amendment to the Book of Order last summer, but needed the approval of a majority of the church's regional bodies, according to the Huffington Post article. The ruling also applied to deacons and church elders.

The church released a statement on the latest vote Tuesday evening.
