District 200 Schools Earn Academic Excellence Award
Six District 200 schools meet Illinois State Board of Education "Academic Excellence" requirements in 2012.
Six District 200 schools made the 2012 Illinois Honor Roll by earning Academic Excellence Awards, a commendation from the Illinois State Board of Education, District 200 announced Thursday.
Emerson Elementary School, Lincoln Elementary School, Longfellow Elementary School, Lowell Elementary School, Whittier Elementary School, and Wiesbrook Elementary School were among 454 schools in Illinois to make the honor roll.
Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services Faith Dahlquist said in a statement, “One of our key goals is to prepare students for college and career readiness. This award demonstrates our continued progress in preparing students for further education after they leave District 200.”
To earn the award, a school must have made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in 2011 and 2012, according to a press release from District 200. In schools serving grades 8 and below, 90 percent of students must have met or exceeded state standards in both reading and mathematics for three most recent school years and in high schools, 80 percent of students must have met or exceeded state standards in both reading and mathematics for the three most recent school years.
District 200 Superintendent Dr. Brian Harris will recognize these schools at the Board of Education meeting Wednesday, Feb. 13 at Pleasant Hill Elementary.

Congratulations to the students, parents and teachers at these six schools. But if you think this "demonstrates continued progress in preparing students for further education *after they leave District 200*," look at the HIGH SCHOOL results, not the elementary schools. Neither high school is making AYP; in fact, 31.4% of students at WWS don't meet minimum standards in reading, per the state report card (http://www.cusd200.org/2353101019165237297/lib/2353101019165237297/WWS_Report_Card_2012.pdf). That is NOT "college and career readiness".

I scanned in a page from the 1993-1994 report card http://janshaw200.com/?attachment_id=289 At that time, the only district entry with more than 11% not meeting standards was 27% of the 10th graders in writing.
