Digging Sportsmanship

  • December 9, 2011

On Wednesday, December 7th, the IHSA Board of Directors, the Sportsmanship Advisory Committee and the IHSA Staff awarded St. Francis High School and the St. Francis community the “Do What’s Right! State Final Sportsmanship Award” for the Girls Volleyball State Finals.  This was based on the high standard that St. Francis Spartans set for other schools to follow, and it  is particularly meaningful as the entire St. Francis community shares in the award; the players, coaches, parents, students, spectators and school personnel.

Student Patrick Holman (Carol Stream) spearheaded the effort on behalf of the senior student fans, working in conjunction with Principal Raeann Huhn.

Coach Peg Kopec announced at a school assembly on Thursday the State Championship experience included many people commenting on the outstanding conduct of the Spartan fans who journeyed to support their team. Coach Kopec went on to thank the students for setting an excellent example and recognized the effort students gave to demonstrate good conduct.

St. Francis High School  President Tom Bednar added, “I’ve always  been impressed by the support that our Spartan community shows at home and away games.  Our students and their families demonstrate great sportsmanship as we cheer on our teams and enjoy the excitement of high school athletic competition.  Congratulations to all that represent our school with class!”
