Checkmate! St. Michael Parish School Delivers at Chess Tournament

On Saturday, November 13, St. Michael Parish School competed at the All-Grade State Championship, which was held at Whitney Young High School in Chicago, Ill.
The Eighth Grade Chess Team won their third consecutive All-Grade State Championship. The team was made up of Liam Masse, Ian Hart, Grant Kozeny, Nate Kranjc and Max Zinski. Zinski also earned the title of Eighth Grade State Champion, while Kranjc captured Third Place.
Fourth graders, Joe Ives, Payton Gryniewicz, Marcus Ingold and Nick Armbrust led the St. Michael fourth grade team to a Second Place finish, with Ives winning Fifteenth Place. The Wheaton school's third grade teamplaced Fifth in State, with Nathan Rhee, Isabella Rhee, Dhalia Farinha, Shane Smith, Christian Ennis and William Doerries contributing to the win.
Additionally, St. Michael Parish School's second grade team of Ned Doerries, Ed Dugan, Jack Vires and Paul Murphy-Hoff took Third Place. Finally, first graders Enzo Farinha and Alex Thomas battled to a Third Place finish. Rounding out the team's 26 players were Kindergartener Maeve Doerries playing in her first tournament, fifth grader Chris Ponne, and sixth Joey Stella and Shawn Smith.
Next up will be a trip to the National All-Grade Chess Championships in Orlando, Fla. in December for the eighth grade team.
