Barry Sweeny of Wheaton died Tuesday, March 6 at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, following complications from chemotherapy treatment for leukemia. He was 66.
He was born June 23, 1945 in Joliet.
He graduated from Northern Illinois University with a Bachelors degree in art education. He received a master's degree in sculpture and pursued a PhD in educational administration.
He was an award-winning classroom teacher for 22 years and particularly enjoyed teaching art and science at Franklin Middle School. He was also a director of the International Mentoring Association for four years, served in 2003-2004 as the part time IMA Executive Director and was also awarded IMA Director Emeritus status.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his mother, Agnes; a son, Matt; a daughter, Beckie; five grandchildren; a brother, Mark; and two nephews.
A visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday, March 9 at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., in Wheaton. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at Glen Ellyn Covenant Church, 277 Hawthorne Blvd., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be directed to Glen Ellyn Covenant Church.

Mr. Sweeney was my art teacher at Franklin and was an amazing man...I was so sorry to hear he is gone~
